The album's lead single, 'Hole in the Head', was co-written by both Miranda Cooper and Brian Higgins, along with Tim Powell, Nick Coler, Niara Scarlett, and the Sugababes themselves.Īt the time, Xenomania were also closely connected to Girls Aloud but, as Brian Higgins told Popjustice, 'Hole in the Head' was done with Sugababes in mind. Given that the band seemed to have found a formula when it came to which songwriters and producers to work with, the group's third album, appropriately titled Three, saw Heidi, Keisha and Mutya head back into the studio with Xenomania. Given the success of the band's second album Angels with Dirty Faces, the Sugababes were whisked back into the studio by Island to try and capitalise on the fact that they were quickly becoming one of the UK's most popular girlbands. There was no way that 'Hole in the Head' could have gone to Girls Aloud… Joining the band's previous single, 'Freak Like Me', the track landed at the top of the singles chart.

Released as the second single from Angels with Dirty Faces, 'Round Round' acted as something of a double whammy for the Sugababes. "What Miranda had very cleverly done is she'd gone back through all the songs that she'd written over the last two or three years and sung the chorus of every single song against this particular piece of drumming and sang to me 'round round baby round round'," he recalled. Giving the band and Cooper three hours to write the track, Higgins recalled that they had magically managed to create something.

So what are we gonna do about that?'" Higgins said on the BBC series Secrets of the Pop Song. I haven't got anything on it, we don't have any song attached to it. "We had a drum track which was just stunning and so I sat down with Miranda on the one day we had the Sugababes in the studio and said 'Right, you know, this is a hit, this piece of music is a hit. Landing on former Atomic Kitten member Heidi Range, the Sugababes also found a new home with Island records.įor their second album, 2002's Angels with Dirty Faces, the band teamed up with pop dream team Miranda Cooper and Brian Higgins, also known as Xenomania.Īnyone familiar with Xenomania's method of music making will be aware that Higgins and Cooper weren't known for their organisation, nor for their rigidity when it came to songwriting. You're gonna be called Sugababies'."Īfter Siobhán's exit, Mutya and Keisha went on the hunt for a new third member and a new record deal. We were like 'Really?' He was like 'Yeah. Ron Tom just said 'Right, you're gonna to be in a band'. The band's third member, Keisha Buchanan, was actually a friend of Mutya's who wanted to check out the recording studio. Mutya sang and, of course, she's got an amazing voice. Mutya's father told him how much his daughter could sing and Ron drove around to the house. "We didn't meet at a party, which is what they always say," Siobhán told Ponystep magazine.
